A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
